Reception – Autumn 2
Week 1
Once upon a time!
This week we started our new topic ‘Once upon a time’. The week started off with listening to our new core text ‘Goldilocks and the three bears’. The children enjoyed listening and joining in with the story, making porridge and creating new chairs for baby bear.
The children also learnt a little about Diwali, the festival of light. They have been busy making diva lamps, Rangoli patterns using familiar 2D shapes and retelling the story of Rama and Sita.
Week 2
This week we the children have enjoyed another familiar traditional Tale- ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. Through the story they created story maps drawing pictures of what happened in the beginning, middle and end, making baskets to carry 3 pieces of toy food, a repeating pattern blanket to cover the food and baked cupcakes.
The children also learnt about what is a habitat and looked at pictures of different habitats. In maths they have been finding out and representing numbers 4 and 5.
Week 3
This week we the children have enjoyed another familiar traditional Tale- ‘The Three Billy Goat Gruff’. Through the story they drew pictures of the troll and wrote about what he would do after he fell in the water. The children came up with some fantastic ideas. Their letter formation is improving each week which is lovely to see. The children enjoyed building bridges in the construction and junk modelling area.
We also spent time to find out about Remembrance Day, Odd Sock Day and Children in Need.
Weeks 4 and 5
Over the last two weeks the children have continued to enjoy listening to and completing activities linked The Three little Pigs and The Gingerbread Man. They have been busy building houses, baking Gingerbread men, painting, and retelling both stories by creating puppets and small worlds. This week the children wrote a letter to Father Christmas which encouraged them to apply what they have been learning in phonics. The children’s letter formation has greatly improved! Maths has also kept the children busy by searching for and building squares and rectangles.
Over the remaining 3 weeks at school the children will be practising their Nativity performance and getting ready for Christmas.
Week 6, 7 and 8
Wow! What can I say! I cannot believe where the first term has gone! The children have worked so hard in their first term in Reception. The team and I are very proud at how much they have all achieved these last three months. The children have tried really hard in all aspects of their learning and have produced some lovely work.
A few of my favourite highlights from the term have been:
The friendships they have made with one another.
Their love to write and practise the phonics they have learnt.
Their creativity in construction, painting and junk modelling areas.
Their confidence to perform in front of the whole school and parents during the Nativity.
