Drowning Prevention Week

The countdown is on to this year’s Drowning Prevention Week, a nationwide campaign dedicated to educating children and families about water safety and the Water Safety Code.
At Chaucer School, we will be taking part in Drowning Prevention Week from 15–19th June, as we believe it is essential that every child understands how to stay safe in and around water.
This message is particularly important following a deeply tragic week. Over the recent bank holiday weekend and half-term break, nine young people across the UK sadly lost their lives in accidental drownings during an unseasonably warm spell. These heart breaking incidents have devastated families and communities and serve as a stark reminder of the importance of water safety education.
As the weather becomes warmer and more young people are drawn to rivers, lakes, canals, reservoirs and the coast to cool off, the need for comprehensive water safety learning has never been greater. Throughout the week, pupils will take part in age-appropriate activities to help them recognise risks, make safe choices, and know what to do in an emergency.
We encourage all families to support these important messages at home and take the opportunity to discuss water safety together.
